BSS 7238: Smoke density tests:
This test is used to access the density of the smoke which is produced when the specimen is exposed to heat. The test is conducted in a 0.5m3  chamber where the specimen is exposed to both radiant and direct flame heat sources and the obscuration of a white light beam is used to measure the density of the smoke.
BSS 7239: Toxicity tests
This test is used to access the toxicity of the fumes which are produced when the specimen is exposed to heat. The fumes are sampled during the smoke density test (BSS 7238), generally at 4 minutes test duration. Analysis of the fumes is conducted in order to assess the concentration of CO, HF, HCl, NOx, SO2 and HCN).
